Alexey Gromyko: RAS Professors must make their contribution to the development of science

The General meeting of RAS Professors took place in Moscow. It was the first meeting of the scientists in this new title, adopted in the end of last year. The Academy structure and ways of the Russian science development were discussed. Professor Al.A. Gromyko told about the meeting results in the interview.
A new title is born — “RAS Professor”
“It is vital that all RAS Professors realize the importance of their title and strive to align their activity with the Academy goals,” – RAS President Vladimir Fortov said in his welcome address.
The “RAS Professor” title was established by RAS Presidium decision #101 of May 12, 2015 with addendum #204 of September 29, 2015 disclosing the title essence. The title is given by RAS Presidium to the scientists, conducting scientific, research and/or educational activity in scientific or educational organizations of higher education for scientific achievements of national and/or international level, as well as active participation in realization of the principal goals and functions of RAS.
The “RAS Professor” title is honorary and is given to the Russian scientists who are not Members of RAS, as well as researchers with Russian citizenship, working in foreign scientific centers and universities, if they actively participate in realization of the principal goals and functions of RAS. The title requires the Doctor scientific degree, over 10 years of scientific activity, age under 50. Besides, the nominees must conduct scientific supervision or consulting, have awards, honorary titles, membership in scientific societies. The right to nominate for the title is granted to Members and Corresponding members of RAS. In 2015 RAS Presidium, as per the nominations presented by RAS departments, gave the “RAS Professor” title to 495 scientists for the first time in history.
The General meeting of RAS Professors decided to establish RAS Professors Coordination Council under the aegis of RAS Presidium with the view of coordination of their activity, as well as promotion of realization of the principal goals and functions of RAS. IE RAS Director Dr. Al.A. Gromyko was appointed the Council Chairman. The Council will be formed by the end of April.
The meeting discussed the draft action program of RAS Professors for 2016, including: determination of long-term fundamental science development priorities and scientific research efficiency improvement; development of the system of expertise and scientific consulting; RAS management system improvement (the information taken from Medvestnik.ru).
With the view of the RAS Professors action program realization 18 working groups in various fields will be created. Concluding the General meeting RAS Presidium Chief Scientific Secretary Mikhail Paltzev described RAS Professors as the talent pool for the Academy itself.
