Presentation of the book by А. Plakans «Brief History of the Baltic States»

On March 10, 2016, IE RAS held presentation of the new book by A. Plakans «Brief History of the Baltic States» in the series «National History» of «Ves Mir» publishing house. The event summoned experts from IE RAS, Institute of General History RAS, Institute of Russian History RAS, IMEMO RAS n.a. Е.М. Primakov, MSU, RSUH, Financial Academy, MGIMO University, Diplomatic Academy, Russian Foreign Ministry, Embassies of the Baltic states.
The welcome speech was presented by IE RAS Director, Professor Al.A. Gromyko. Director of «Ves Mir» publishing house О.А. Zimarin read the address of А. Plakans to the participants of the event and presented his report covering the key points of the book. А. Plakans, American professor, born in Latvia, wrote a solid and balanced essay on the history of the three countries. In the work, covering immense historical period – since the first appearance of man on the Eastern coast of the Baltic sea – the author analyses both differences, and common features of history of the peoples and states of the coast. А. Plakans believes that all the peoples who ever lived on the Baltic coast, contributed to development of the region. Studying the past, it is necessary to think about peaceful and harmonious future as the only condition of preserving by the Baltic peoples of their identity in globalization era. Along with political history of the region, А. Plakans describes the evolution of social relations at various stages of development of the three countries.
