Analytical paper No 8, 2024 «The change of prime ministers in the Republic of Ireland is an indicator of the government crisis»

  • 04 April 2024
IE RAS presents Analytical papers of IE RAS No 8, 2024 «The change of prime ministers in the Republic of Ireland is an indicator of the government crisis» (in Russian) by Oleg Okhoshin, Candidate of Science (History), Senior Research Fellow of Centre for British Studies, Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On March 20, 2024, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland L. Varadkar resigned amid the failure of constitutional referendums to change the legal language of marriage and family responsibilities. On March 24, 2024, the ruling Fine Gael party elected 37-year-old S. Harris as its new leader, who will become the youngest head of government. The change of prime ministers indicates a growing crisis in the political course of the coalition government. In these conditions, the opposition party Sinn Féin despite having supported the referendums has a greater chance of becoming the favorite in the 2025 general elections if it builds its election campaign correctly.
