Valentin P. Fedorov – The Scientist, The Politician, The Citizen, and His Legacy

On February 16, 2022, the Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences, held the scientific conference «Valentin P. Fedorov – The Scientist, The Politician, The Citizen, and His Legacy» with presentation of the diary book by V. Fedorov «Political Chronology of Russia (1998-2000)».
 
The conference was opened by Al. A. Gromyko, IE RAS Director. He highlighted the main stages of Valentin Fedorov’s life, milestone achievements in work and public service, invaluable contribution to development of the country, together with his outstanding scientific and organizational activities in IE RAS.
 
The participants focused on the issues of Russia's domestic and foreign policy, European studies following the footsteps of Valentin Fedorov’s scientific discoveries, reasonings and predictions.
 
Vladislav B. Belov, Deputy Director IE RAS, and Vladimir M. Grinin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Germany (2010-2018), President of the Russia-Germany society (Gesellschaft Russland-Deutschland), along with Vladimir M. Polenov, Vice-President, stressed V. Fedorov's contribution to German studies, focusing on the current state, prospects and impact on Russian-German relations development.
 
Oleg A. Zimarin, director and editor-in-chief of «Ves Mir» publishing house, told about Valentin Fedorov's diary, through all stages of the publication process, and highly appreciated cooperation with IE RAS.
 
Representative of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Vladimir M. Nosov and editor of regional newspaper «Sovetsky Sakhalin» Tatiana A. Vyshkovskaya spoke about the high authority of V. Fedorov as governor of Sakhalin, his contribution to protection of the territorial integrity of Russia, social and economic development of the region and especially the Kuril Islands.
 
Managing Director of Department of International Multilateral Cooperation and Integration of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) Sergey V. Mikhnevich highlighted activities of V. Fedorov as RSPP vice-president and his role in development of Russian market economy foundations.
 
Anatoly I. Bazhan, Head of Department of Economic studies IE RAS marked the innovative ideas and views of V. Fedorov on development of the economic theory and prospects for improving European integration.
 
Valery P. Zhuravel, Head of Center for Arctic Studies IE RAS, and Artem.V. Makulin, Director of the Higher School of Social Sciences, Humanities and International Communication of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov, shared V. Fedorov’s views on Arctic issues. A decision was made to regularly hold Arctic seminars named after Valentin P. Fedorov based on Center for Arctic Studies IE RAS, in cooperation with NArFU named after M.V. Lomonosov and other scientific and educational institutions, conducting Arctic research.
 
MGIMO Professor Nikolay V. Pavlov noted the importance of scientific cooperation between universities and academic institutions in Moscow, Association for European Studies in studying political and economic processes taking place in Europe.
 
IE RAS researchers Olga Yu. Potemkina, Elena V. Ananyeva, Vladimir Ya. Schweitzer, Sergey M. Fedorov shared their memories of V. Fedorov as a citizen and patriot of Russia, a democratic and modest person.
 
The conference was attended by Tamara Mikhailovna, widow of Valentin Fedorov, and their daughter Ulyana Valentinovna.
 
A greeting by the Special Representative of the President of Russian Federation for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, Deputy of the State Duma Artur N. Chilingarov was sent to participants of the conference.
 
The conference was moderated by Vladislav B. Belov.
