On 27 June 2016, IE RAS held the international conference “EU referendum and acute problems of UK politics”, organised by the Centre for British Studies, headed by Dr E. Ananieva. The event was attended by Dr Laurie Bristow, Her Majesty’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Russian Federation.
In the opening address, IE RAS Director Dr Alexey Gromyko spoke on the current situation in light of the EU referendum outcome, main challenges for UK politics, economy and foreign policy, as well as Russian-British relations. Dr Laurie Bristow made a detailed presentation, highlighting the long-term trends in foreign policy and bilateral relations, and took part in the Q&A session and discussion.
In the Economy session, particular interest was attracted to the reports of Dr E. Khesin, who spoke on the referendum impact on British economy, and Alan Thompson, Director of Russo-British Chamber of Commerce, who described the economic and trade relations and joint projects “From the British perspective”. In turn, A. Bugaets, expert of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, offered his assessment of the status and prospects of economic cooperation between two countries.
In the course of discussion, leading experts in British studies, representing research institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and relevant universities, analysed the EU referendum campaign, its results and impact, discussed a wide range of domestic political issues (UK-wide and regional), foreign policy (UK relations with the EU, the ”special relationship” with the US etc.), Russian-British relations. Notably, Dr G. Nikiporets-Takigawa, lecturer at Cambridge University, presented “The Referendum Campaign – Media Space and Inevitable Choice, from the Insider Perspective” report; Dr E. Ananieva and Dr E. Susloparova analysed the status of major political parties (Conservatives and Labour); Dr N. Kapitonova spoke on UK foreign policy; Dr L. Babynina shared her view of future relations between UK and the EU countries; Dr K. Godovanyuk analysed Russian-British relations and the “Russian factor” in the referendum campaign. A lively discussion followed.
