Dialogue of members of the US Congress, deputies of the Russian State Duma and Bundestag: responding to common external political challenges

On April 30 – May 4, 2016 in Briesen (Germany) the international conference for inter-parliamentary dialogue of USA, Russia and Germany «Responding to common external political challenges» was held. The forum was co-organized by OSCE and Aspen University (independent American research center for social and human sciences). This event is unique to the history of relations of the three states in recent years.
IE RAS Director, RAS Professor Al.A. Gromyko devoted his report at the conference to the Minsk process in the context of common European security. The report and discussion after it with colleagues from Germany and USA disclosed the complex of factors of the conflict in the South-Eastern Ukraine, which seriously worsened the relations between Russia and the West. Participants discussed measures to cease the military phase of the conflict, OSCE peace keeping role, future legal status of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, Ukrainian authorities actions, expert evaluation of Minsk agreements efficiency, possible role of USA, Germany and Russia in holding down and settling the conflict.
RAS Department of Global Problems and International Relations was represented as well by Scientific Head of the Institute of USA and Canada, Academician S.М. Rogov and deputy IMEMO Director, Dr. F.G. Voitolovskiy.
During the conference other acute problems were discussed: the role of inter-parliamentary dialogue in overcoming common challenges, nuclear weapons reduction (agreement on Iran and international nonproliferation efforts), counteracting terrorism in the Middle East, strengthening trust in Europe in the context of German OSCE chairmanship, long-term prospects of the Russian-American relations.
The forum was attended by representative delegation of the Russian Parliament, including Chairman of International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council К.I. Кosachev, Chairman of International Affairs Committee of the State Duma А.К. Pushkov, Chairman of Constitutional Law and State Building Committee V.N. Pligin etc.
