Russia – EU: is the «relaunch» possible?

  • 28 June 2016
On June 28, 2016, deputy IE RAS Director О. Butorina took part in the «Real Time» broadcast of Yuri Pronko on Tzargrad TV channel.

The decision of British citizens to leave the European Union launched dramatic processes on the continent. In parallel, a difficult but progressing dialogue between Moscow and Brussels is underway. The visit of the European Commission Head J.-C. Junker to the Economic forum in Saint-Petersburg served as a potent starting point for the re-launch of bilateral relations.

Today, there are necessary conditions for pulling EU – Russia relations off the dead halt, where they have been stuck for the last years. Brussels is stimulated the British referendum, no matter what consequences it may bring in the future. The «No», voiced by UK citizens to the unified Europe, is an unambiguous signal to the European Commission and European Parliament that the European integration can no longer evolve in the former strict boundaries. It needs flexibility and variability, including the relations with third countries. And Russia is in the list.

For Moscow the new possibilities are opening thanks to the development of Eurasian integration. The objective is to transfer the relations from EU – Russia format to EU – EAEU framework. The dialogue between two regional integration groups will ease the tension of current political problems and enrich the bilateral agenda with larger scale matters of long-term economic and political cooperation in Europe. And, such dialogue will be more equal than the one between the EU and a single country, no matter it is as large as Russia.
