Video bridge Moscow – Berlin «Bundestag voting: possible consequences for German-Turkish relations and European security»

On June 3, 2016, deputy IE RAS Director V.B. Belov took part in Moscow – Berlin video bridge, devoted to possible consequences for German-Turkish relations and European security of Bundestag voting on June 2 on the resolution «In memory of the genocide of Armenians and other Christian minorities in the Osman empire 101 years ago».
It is known that prior to the voting Turkish politicians warned that the initiative could have serious consequences for Turkish-German relations, as well as realization of the previously signed agreement on immigrants. And shortly after the practically unanimous vote Turkey revoked its Ambassador from Berlin.
Today, Germany and the EU in general face serious problems, stemming from the migration crisis and terrorist threat, while the relations of Moscow and Berlin are impaired by the sanctions which, judging by G7 summit statements in May, will be maintained despite diminishing support in FRG and the EU.
In this context German participants – Bundestag deputy Andrej Hunko (Left Party) and Chairman of "WeltTrends" journal board, professor Lutz Kleinwächter – together with V.B. Belov discussed the following questions:
- will the democratic vote of Bundestag imply consequences for German-Turkish relations?
- should a new cycle of the immigration crisis provoked by Turkey be expected?
- what challenges are the Europeans facing now?
- what awaits Russian-German relations in the nearest future, provided the sanctions are kept, as already stated by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel?
