IE RAS presents Analytical papers of IE RAS No 41, 2026 «UK under A. Burnham: Early Elections to Change Course?» (in Russian) by Elena Ananieva, Candidate of Science (Philosophy), Head of the Center for British Studies, Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences.
In the face of deteriorating relations between Britain and the United States, A. Burnham continues Starmer’s course. looking at rapprochement with the EU and confrontation with Russia. The implementation of the new PM's program (UK rejoining the EU, reform of social security and the electoral system) requires a revision of the 2024 Labour party manifesto and, accordingly, early elections. The relatively high popularity of A. Burnham and the ruling Party, coupled with the shift in voters’ preferences from N. Farage and his party to the Conservatives, as well as the problems faced by the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats, create an opportunity for A. Burnham to make the risky decision to call early elections.
