On March 29-30, 2016, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation held the international conference «The European Security Architecture: Cooperation Prospects», chaired by S.А. Ordzhonikidze, Vice-President of the Chamber, Chairman of the Russian Public Council on International Cooperation and Public Diplomacy of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation. The conference was organized by: the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, the Institute for International Studies of MGIMO University with participation of the Geneva Center for Humanitarian Dialogue.
The conference covered the key issues of security and cooperation in Europe: Russia and the EU – common challenges and threats (regional crises, international terrorist threat, migration crisis); institutional mechanisms of fighting the common threats and challenges (the role of OSCE, EU and NATO in settling crises in Europe, preventive diplomacy, EU-EAEU cooperation prospects, prospects of creating a new strategic partnership in Europe).
The Geneva Center was represented by former Swiss President and Foreign Affairs Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey, the Center Director David Harland, members of the EU Delegation to Russia. The Russian party in the conference was represented by speeches of RAS Academician, IMEMO Directorate member V.G. Baranovsky, IE RAS Scientific Secretary N.B. Kondratieva, Head of IE RAS European Security Department D.А. Danilov, senior scientific associate of IE RAS I.N. Sherbak, as well as experts of IIS of MGIMO University.
The participants decided to continue the discussion in December 2016, and use its results for preparing a list of prospective directions of cooperation between Russia and the EU and recommendations for rapprochement of their positions.
